How to create captivating drone footage

How to shoot impressive aerial footage with your drone and which are the best shooting models?

Adjust the camera

The first setting you need to do is the frame rate - set it to 24 frames per second for a film look. To shoot a 4K video that will capture the smallest details and give you the flexibility to crop the frame during editing, this is the correct setting. For action and dynamic scenarios, select 1080p at 60 or even 120 frames per second so you can slow the footage down later.

Light matters

Everyone wants to achieve that softness of light that gives extra beauty to the frame. The same goes for video. Shooting during "golden hour" (just before sunset) or at first daylight gives you dramatic contrast and colors that help you capture impressive footage. At this time of day, the colors are likely to be warm and ethereal, creating a captivating feeling.

Consider the conditions

Avoid shooting in strong winds and rain with a drone. To prevent distortion of the frames when shooting at the sun, do not point the camera so that the propellers cast a shadow on the lens.

In order for the propellers not to fall into the lens of your drone, we recommend using a wide- angle of the camera instead of getting too close. If you point the camera at direct sunlight, dust or other particles in the air might become visible, but that may also be considered to be a desired effect.

Use filters

To maintain smooth and natural movements in your shots, set the shutter speed at double the frame rate; if you shoot at 24 frames per second, the shutter speed should be 24x2 = approximately 1/50 of a second. If too much light enters, attach a neutral density (ND) filter to your camera. These drone accessories modify captured light and with a low refractive index, promise high-quality footage. Let the "aircam" fly

Most new drones are available with pre-programmed intelligent flight modes. They have modes in which the drone flies backwards with its camera pointing at you, and can shoot in an orbit mode, where the device orbits a stationary object while keeping the camera always pointing at it. Some drones can even track fast-moving objects so you can make it follow running animals or even yourself while you play sports outside. If your drone has such capabilities, take advantage of them!

Find some perspective

Having an idea that is different and will impress is the thing that will set you apart. Think about how to make the video as original as possible. Go through an arch and then rise into the air. Create a frame movement that will make people gasp!

And remember - practice, practice, practice!

Before you start shooting with your drone, learn to control it. Start with takeoff and landing, then study the various piloting techniques until you get used to the remote and feel full control over the drone. This way you will be insured against accidents and damage to the drone even before you start shooting.
