Here you will find out what the most common causes of drone accidents are and what to do next

Every pilot knows that drone accidents are likely to occur during a flight or landing. The reason may be both in the pilot himself and in the various conditions that may lead to a loss of control of the device. To know how to handle such moments, it is good to be prepared in advance. The tips you will learn from this article can help you prevent unwanted situations, save money, and know what you need to do to get your favourite aircraft back in the air. Sometimes, however, the damage can be so great that you have to look for a service technician to repair a drone or replace a few parts with new ones.

Causes of drone crashes

To avoid unwanted dangerous situations, the best thing you can do is to find out in which piloting cases there may be a complication or an accident. For your convenience, we have compiled a list of the most common reasons why your drone may be damaged. The listed reasons are those that can be controlled by you as a pilot.

Flying indoors

Most drones are not made to be flown indoors, but often one of the causes of serious damage is flying in tight spaces. Keep in mind that this is dangerous not only for your device but also for you, your loved ones, and your home. So, for security reasons - pilot the drone only in open spaces.

FPV flight

When flying FPV ("first-person view"), you are very likely to lose control of your drone if you focus too much on what you see on the video screen and not on the environment. When using FPV glasses, the probability of this is even greater. A good tip in such situations is to be with a friend, who can warn you if you are approaching an obstacle.

Loss of orientation

In the beginning, when you learn to control your drone, it may be difficult for you to get used to the sense of orientation and control of the device. You may want to turn to avoid an obstacle, but in fact, point the drone straight at the obstacle. To avoid such incidents, it is important to fly in open areas such as parks at the beginning until you get a natural sense of control of the machine.

Flying too far away

When you pilot your drone, you may be tempted to send it far from the controller and this may lead to a loss of control. According to airspace regulations in Bulgaria, you should not lift the machine more than 120 meters from the ground and you should maintain constant line of sight, so reasonable handling and piloting at a thoughtful distance and with a planned route are of great importance. If not, you may be fined and you may endanger aircraft flying above said altitude.

Drone recovery

If you have closely monitored the flight of your drone, you will know where it has been last before it landed on the ground. The more popular drone models have GPS navigation that can help you find where your drone is. The DJI Phantom series, for example, works with navigation that can establish a live connection and show you exactly where the device is.

When you find the drone, the first thing you need to do is inspect it for damage. Document the damage by taking pictures with your smartphone. They can be especially useful to you if you have a warranty.

To avoid injuries, make sure the unmanned device and the controller are turned off.

Check the drone body

When you pick up your drone, clean its body of dirt and debris to check for cracks or damage. Removal of pollution will facilitate verification of damage that may otherwise be difficult to detect.

Check the propellers

If a crash has occurred with your drone, one of the most common types of damage is damage to the propellers. If you do not have propeller protectors, it is almost certain that there will be damaged in a collision. Even the smallest cracks in the propellers should be a reason for buying new ones. Check their edges, as even the smallest damage can affect flight efficiency.

Check the landing gear

Most drones have built-in “landing gears”, and some have the ability to place supplemental landing extensions. When you have landed by accident or you have simply not been able to stabilize the machine so that it lands smoothly, always check the landing gears for cracks and damage.
